The student majoring in mathematical sciences at Sweet Briar can expect a variety of opportunities beyond the formal curriculum. Students may work as computer consultants on campus or may find internships in various areas of interest throughout the United States. Opportunities are also available for special research projects. The Sweet Briar Honors Program allows talented seniors to undertake a more lengthy research project and to work for the B.A. or B.S. degree with honors in Mathematical Science.

Kim is a Mathematics-Physics and Studio Art double major, graduating this May. At Sweet Briar she is active in the theatre department, working in their costume shop. She has also had two REU (Research Experience for Undergraduates) experiences off campus, one at Hope College studying chemical engineering and one at the University of Florida studying biophysics.

I chose mathematics-physics as my major after two years of indecision about my future plans. I originally chose biology as a major, but after my first physics class I decided I loved physics! I want to be a teacher in both math and physics for high school students.

I received a Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges grant for summer research in laser spectroscopy last summer at Sweet Briar, which was a great experience. I want to continue doing research in the future, which is why I plan to go to graduate school in physics after a few years of teaching high school. I also love to dance, and I recently declared a dance minor.

I spend a lot of time with kids when I'm not in school, and I have a big family back home in Maryland. I love to water-ski, dance and sing, and as most of my friends will tell you, I am quite a bookworm. I work in the library at Sweet Briar, as well as tutor for the introductory physics classes and local high school students.

I chose to major in computer science because I seem to be a natural with computers. I am always the one back home who is depended upon to fix problems with the computer, so I decided to broaden my horizons with computer programming. Maybe some day I can help make computer errors a thing of the past.

I love my math and computer courses. Having a math minor with a computer science major will give mean added advantage when going out to find a job.

I was a swimmer for Sweet Briar my freshman year and loved it, but found out that academics are a higher priority.

During the summer I worked for Academic Computing on campus. I am a day student so finding a summer job on short notice was nice. There are many job opportunities on campus and you can even have them coincide with your major like I did.

I chose my math major quite literally while standing in line to sign up for classes my first semester at Sweet Briar. I have always liked math and decided that I might as well go for it. I have not once regretted that decision. At the moment, I am still undecided about how I will use my two majors. My hope is to be able to find a career that combines math and music.

Aside from my classes, I spend quite a bit of time helping out the music department, as both a departmental assistant and a tutor. I also play the piano regularly for the Open Door service on campus.

When I am not living at Guion and Babcock (my homes away from home), you can usually find me sitting at my computer, listening to music and surfing the internet. I also enjoy reading anything from fantasy/sci-fi novels to science magazines.

I am a math BS and chemistry BS double major. I volunteer about 75 hours a month as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) at the local rescue squad near campus. I also volunteer at a fire rescue company at home, and have been for almost 4 years. I have been riding horses since I was 7, and that is a very big part of my life. I hope to one day go to grad school for chemistry, but have no set plans after grad school.
